Like someone else said, the owner is a mean old man. I bought a ring from him that didn't hold up for more than 6 months. I brought it back to talk to him about it, and he told me he didn't care and kicked me out! Definitely a leech on tourists that won't return when their product falls apart.
Be aware that the real expense happens if and when you decide to have your gems cut and polished. They'll explain everything to you, though, so there's not any unpleasant surprises. Also, they were kind enough to give us a complementary aquamarine for my wife's pendant, since we didn't find one of our own that day.
Found topaz, rubies, citrine, smokey quartz, garnets, sapphires, aquamarine, amethysts in the local bucket.
You will get dirty, so I definitely suggest bringing extra clothes if you choose to mine early in the day.
The staff is helpful and friendly and has never been pushy about gem cutting since I've been coming to this place.
$75 for the bucket is a bit steep for an hour's fun for three people, but we did end up finding a lot of nice gems. Also, they give you the opportunity to pick one or more easter eggs which each contain a "mystery" pre-cut gem. That does sweeten the deal a bit.
Stopped in here on our way back from DryFalls 7/4/17, walked in with only 2 other customers in the store and staff wouldn't even acknowledge we were there. Left and found a much cheaper and friendlier mine
This is a fine place for children and a fun way to spend the day for a couple hours. While the operation has shrunk since I visited as a child, it's still a very enjoyable activity.
Paid $75 for a five gallon bucket of dirt. Sounds crazy, but this dirt is special! My wife, my 8-year old daughter, and I had a lot of fun sifting through the dirt and pulling out rubies, sapphires, emeralds, topaz, and a lot of quartz. My daughter found a 300 karat ruby in her pile, while my wife pulled out another ruby that we decided to get cut and polished along with three other stones to create a pendant. The ruby ended up being near flawless!
Very friendly staff but unfortunately very lacking in gems. Most of what we found was sandstone and dirt. Jackson Hole has a much better bang for your buck.
